Cabinwood Farm announces the birth of their first foal of 2008!
Little Kaitlin Elizabeth (Kaitie Beth for short) was born on April 4 to old-timer Mom Chutney. She was NOT a tiny foal but measured 22″ at birth.

Wendy Nye of Horse Creek Farm welcomes her first foal of the season! Her first-time mom jennet Buttercup gave birth the last weekend in March to this tiny black jennet foal. She was only 18″ tall!
Congrats to the Nyes’ and to Buttercup!

Our Thanks to Ingrid Nelson from Delta Animal Therapy who spoke with the DonkeyPals for our March meeting held at the Burton Library. Ingrid got all of us excited about getting our donkeys trained and certified as Delta Therapy donkeys! Thank you Ingrid for bringing us this thoughtful subject and giving us the info needed to go forward into “therapy by donkey!”

No matter what size donkeys you raise, you have to admit that this is one “gorgeous” jack!
Phil and Tami Gingrich of Bundysburg Buckskins of Middlefield, Ohio have just aquired this wonderful 56 inch black roan mammoth breeding jack! Tami says they looked for over 3 years to find just the right jack for their breeding program and finally came up with “Doc” in Enumclaw, Washington at Osceola Kingdom Longears.
It was a LONG transport ride from the west coast taking over 12 days due to all the winter storms that came up during the trip and kept their transport stranded! But, as the old saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait!” and “Doc” certainly will be a good thing for Bundysburg Buckskins.

Hi DonkeyPals!
Obviously, this time of year causes great additional stress on all animal rescue facilities, both financially and in space available to care for the larger number of needy animals that winter time seems to bring in. We are trying to do our best to network with local rescues of interest and help them in any way we can. Cabinwood Farm has been a supporter of Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna,OH for several years. They have asked us to please pass along their information to you and also post some current and urgent needs they are having. If you are in any way able to help them in any of these needs, either urgent or long term, please contact them as soon as possible at the contact info I will give below.
Anyone having an interest in overall general horse adoption should take a look on their website at those available for adoption and give them a call as they are overwhelmed with the number of horses they have taken in. Many are unable to be ridden anymore and would just make great companions but some still can be ridden for trail and pleasure and have the benefit of some training and trust already built in!
For those not so ready to take in a larger animal, Happy trails has numerous other interesting creatures that would make great additions to any family! Goats, pigs, chickens, you name it…they usually have something for everyone!
Urgent needs right now are for two animals…
One is a small 20 yr old sorrel pony named Susie. Susie has been in a foster home but must be moved immediately due to the foster caregivers changing life choices. Susie has been foundered but despite being a little gimpy is still a happy little pony who gets along great with everyone and other animals. She eats mostly hay, very little grain and beyond the foundering problems, she has been given a good bill of health from the Equine Specialty Hospital.
The second animal is a 10 year old thoroughbred gelding named Ziggy. He is a tall boy with navicular syndrome but is still ridable for trail if he wears shoes. He has been treated by the Equine Specialty Hospital as well and comes with a clean health record otherwise and gets along well with other animals and people. He, too, must be moved immediately and would like to find a more permanent adoptive home or someone who would consider fostering him.

Although this rescue has not had a lot of donkeys come through to rescue in the past, they recently have had several and have been lucky to have placed them quickly into homes that are already approved to foster or adopt. If any of you are interested and willing to become a pre-approved foster or adoptive home for future donkeys in need, we can get you the proper paperwork in advance, do the inspection and have the things needed in place on the chance anything new would come through and need placement. You can contact me, Lori Wargo or Annette Fisher at the rescue for further info on this!

December 2007 Christmas party meeting

The men cleaned up at the December holiday DonkeyPals meeting held tonight in the Gallery at Kent State Geauga Campus in Burton, Oh. Pictured are Doug Schwetz and Jason Bennett, both big winners in the gift exchange. Jason picked the winning number for the grand prize talking and honking stuffed donkey and Doug ended up with the Wolf family Christmas PIG all dressed up in her finest!!!
Good food, good conversation and the holiday spirit was plentiful tonight. Maybe donkey people are just usually very jovial or maybe it was Dad Herrick’s Christmas punch that Wendy brought in a GIANT jug that made us all so tipsy!!
Tonight we welcomed new member Susan Brochak of Unionville, Ohio in Lake County. Susan has a riding horse and also cares for an elderly gray mini as her horse’s companion.

HEEHAW to a great donkey year in 2008!!!!!
A small crowd was at Cogan’s last night for the November meeting but there was lively talk and much donkey discussion going on despite the small crowd! Around the donkey table were Lori, Carol, Cindy, Bev, Doug, Mindi and Janice. We talked about the trouble Doug and Mindi were having with their two little jacks fighting and we all gave suggestions as to what they could do to help them get along better…the concensus was definitely GELDING! Other discussions were about riding donks, unethical breeding practices, safe grain feeding and many other informative subjects.
Carol brought a suprise wrapped gift that we all drew numbers out of a hat to see who got to take it home! Janice was the big winner and found a cute wooden hoilday scarecrow figure. Congrats Janice!
Next months meeting will be held at the Gallery room off the main lobby at the Kent State regional campus in Burton, next to the Geauga County Fairgrounds. A little holiday spirit with bring a small holiday yummy and a funny gag gift for exchange…also, we will be showing an educational foaling video, too!

This year’s Wachovia Securities American Gold Cup was a terrific success and I’d like to thank you for your support. Without our valued partners we could never put on a show of this caliber—the donkeys were a big hit! In just two years, since moving the Gold Cup home to Cleveland, we have established a strong base of support here in Northeast Ohio. I look forward to continuing to build and improve upon what we have started with your ongoing support.
Our growth over the prior year was particularly evident when you walked through the stable area— the number of riders competing this year doubled over the prior year! We were proud to host the nation’s most talented equestrians and we introduced many newcomers to Northeast Ohio and the wonderful Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field show grounds with all of its improvements.
If you missed the $100,000 Wachovia Securities American Gold Cup finale on Sunday, Canadian Olympic veteran Mario Deslauriers and Paradigm were the victors in the only clear round and Anne Kursinski and Lorenzo were second with one time fault. It was a great World Cup qualifying event and video of the winning round will be on our web site, www.AmericanGoldCup.net, as well as event updates.
I am proud that through the American Gold Cup efforts we could also promote a number of local organizations and charities, and assist their goals. Mark your calendars now for next year— September 17 to 21, 2008!

DonkeyPals Oct 2007 Meeting at Carol Cooper’s Windview Farm

Despite an onset of COLD and wet weather the October DonkeyPals meeting was held at Carol Cooper’s Windview Farm! Great FOOD, great COMPANY, and Great DONKEY CONVERSATION was had!!!!
A hearty buffet meal was served and since it was too wet and cold to do the farm tour we all stayed in where it was warm and watched a two hour donkey training video by Chrystal Ward. Alot of information was absorbed…some good, some questionable but all of it stimulated great discussion and laughter, too! It was suggested that DonkeyPals make their own training video next summer as a fundraising venture….The REAL Training story of Donkeys! Out-takes, included! Now there is food for thought!
We ended up the evening with Carol’s version of a “re-gifting” door prize giveaway! Great idea, Carol! Scented candles, very interesting T-shirts, socks and various other unique treasures were unwrapped. As “they” say…one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! HA!
Next month our meeting will be a week later since Thanksgiving will be more than enough to do on our regular week. Mark your calendar for November 28 and as soon as we know WHERE we will have it, I’ll let you know!
